THE ART OF OPPRESSION SERIES

Check It Out

Black Box Gallery - a local Dearborn family run business - has been dedicated to engaging our community through a variety of artistic platforms for nearly 6 years.   The owners have dedicated our lives to serving the community.

To that end, based on recent events, we are inspired to make space in our exhibition calendar for the “art of oppression” series - that is, works of art whose creative energy is derived from the forces used to subjugate, humiliate, and even cause the uprising of people - which is their right -  in response.

NEVER AGAIN | AGAIN

                  1943 | 2023

RETROSPECTIVE OF AN UPRISING -NOVEMBER 24TH, 2023

Our kick off for the series is a visual exhibition that looks at two events separated by 80 years - the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 and the Gaza Uprising of 2023.   These two events are inextricably linked to each other, both resulting in the genocide of a captive and defenseless civilian population.  Unlike in the past, with daily live streaming of events in Gaza, we can no longer claim to be “unaware” of the atrocities being committed.

What better time to question ourselves and reflect on the state of oppression in global human affairs, than during the 2023 holiday season of “Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards Men”?

We invite you to explore “Never Again | Again” - a series of photos from 1943 and 2023 that seek to bring to light the underlying state of affairs that can lead to an uprising and genocide simultaneously.
