METAPHYSICAL GRAFFITI

Please join the discussion of whether the street art that exists today is made of one substance or many, and whether what we call our culture is inevitable or driven and shaped by chance.  For years, graffiti has loomed between the borders of true art, mindless trash, and personal folly - a way of solely simply getting your name around town! 

The various forms and styles of graffiti make it difficult at times for the viewer to distinguish the meaningless strokes from those that are clearly art.  Looking deeper, what begins to emerge is a clear foundation of design, a strong sense of form, and vibrant colors, all combining to create the dynamic images that tickle the eye and mind. 

Although many of these painters are extremely talented and spend a considerable amount of time on their pieces, in general, society has labeled them as vandals - out to damage private property with visual pollution.

However,  in today's inner-city art boom, these same artists have found a platform to engage in a public debate asking - what is art?

Please join the discussion as Black Box Gallery opens its doors to a group of artists who embody a culture rich of traditions, strong personal identity, and visually pleasing aesthetics as they come together - like so many nights "on the tracks" - to showcase their collective talent and expose a counterculture concept of "what is art."
